Program and Certification Requirements

EDUCATIONAL DIAGNOSTICIAN:  The Master of Education with a Specialization in Educational Diagnostician program at Sul Ross State University requires 30 semester hours in education courses designed to enable the student to meet the needs of students with disabilities, psychoeducational and diagnostic assessment, and resource areas. The courses are intended to provide the student with an in-depth, hands-on, practical approach to assessment and evaluation. This rigorous and comprehensive course of study is intended to prepare students for a fulfilling career as an educational diagnostician. Students need a minimum of three years teaching experience and a valid Texas classroom teaching certificate.

  • Purchase and Complete Certify Teacher preparation exam
  • Pass TExES 153 Educational Diagnostician exam
  • Apply for Graduation

EDUCATIONAL DIAGNOSTICIAN CERTIFICATION ONLY:  This option is for students already holding a master’s degree in education or a related field from an accredited university. The certification only program requires completion of 21 semester hours. The student must apply to the university and meet the admission criteria. Upon acceptance, a transcript review will be performed by the major advisor to determine proficiency. Additional coursework may be required if an acceptable level of proficiency is not demonstrated by previous coursework and experience.  Students need a minimum of three years teaching experience and a valid Texas classroom teaching certificate.

For students seeking certification only: Certification Only Degree plan

*You must hold a valid Texas teacher certificate AND at least 3 years teaching experience in a TEA accredited school in order to become fully certified. These are not requirements to enter the program and may be completed concurrently with coursework.

Practicum Requirements

All students will be required to complete 160 clock hours of field-based experience during the last semester of enrollment in the educational diagnostician program. Students will enroll in ED 7318, Practicum in Special Education, with the approval of the program major advisor. The practicum offers an opportunity for the educational diagnostician student to work within a school district under the guidance and supervision of an appointed mentor and a university supervisor. Please contact the program major advisor for detailed information regarding the practicum requirements.

_____Begin coursework (Contact your advisor every semester for course advising. Do NOT self-advise!)

_____If seeking a Master's degree, complete the Master's Degree Comprehensive Examination / Portfolio Defense Application  form the semester prior to anticipated graduation

_____Complete the Graduation Application one semester prior to anticipated graduation (For this application to be considered you must complete all items and pay your fees(s)in the cashier's office, located in the Briscoe Administration Building, Room 205. Return application and your receipt to the Dean, School of Professional Studies, Box C-91, SRSU, Alpine, TX 79832, or to Morelock Administration Building, Room 203.)
