Post Baccalaureate Initial Certification Program (PBICP)

Welcome to the Sul Ross State University's Post Baccalaureate Initial Certification Program (PBICP). This program is accredited through the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and complies with requirements set forth with that agency. The PBICP is an alternative certification program for those individuals with a bachelor's degree that are seeking Texas teacher certification.  In order to be eligible for admission to the PBICP, a candidate must:

- have a baccalaureate (bachelor's) degree earned from and conferred by an institution of higher education that is recognized by one of the regional accrediting agencies by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board;

-an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75 or at least 2.75 in the last 60 semester credit hours;

-a minimum of 12 semester credit hours in the subject-specific content area for the certification sought, a passing score on a content certification examination, or a passing score on a content examination (including PACT);

-demonstrate oral communication skills: A grade of C or better in 3 sch of Oral Communication and 12 sch of English

-Satisfactory report of criminal background inquiry

_____Contact the PBICP to conduct a preliminary check for eligibility and transcript evalaution

_____Register and pass the PACT: Pre-Admission Content Test (contact program advisor for more information and eligibility)

_____Apply to Sul Ross State University as either a Non-Degree Seeking student (Texas teacher certification only) or Master's seeking (Master's of Education with Alternative Certification) student

_____Visit the Office of Financial Aid website for information about available financial assistance

_____Read the PBICP Handbook, especially important is the criteria for Full Admission status to the PBICP

_____Begin completing requirements towards Full Admission status to the PBICP

_____Contact the program advisor to complete a deficiency plan and, if applicable a degree plan

_____Visit the SRSU bookstore to order textbooks

_____Begin coursework (Contact your advisor every semester for course advising. Do NOT self-advise!)

_____Decide between the Internship and Clinical Teaching, see handbook, request application form for Eligibility for Internship form

_____Complete the Application for Comprehensive Examination form the semester prior to anticipated graduation (Master's Only)

_____Complete the Graduation Application (Master's only) one semester prior to anticipated graduation (For this application to be considered you must complete all items and pay your fees(s)in the cashier's office, located in the Briscoe Administration Building, Room 205. Return application and your receipt to the Dean, School of Professional Studies, Box C-91, SRSU, Alpine, TX 79832, or to Morelock Administration Building, Room 203.)

_____Complete TExES PPR testing requirement (Certify Teacher and TExES)

_____Once all requirements are complete, apply for certification (contact advisor for more information)
