Welcome to the Educational Leadership Program at Sul Ross State University. We take pride in the fact that our school administration program has been preparing graduates for many years to serve as superintendents, central office administrators, principals, assistant principals, and supervisors. Graduates of our principal preparation program receive a Master of Education degree with a specialization in Educational Leadership.  Those already holding a Master's degree from an approved program are eligible to complete the certification only option.  

For students seeking a Master's degree and principal certification:

·         Complete 30 sch of coursework

·         Apply for Candidacy after first 12 hours of completed coursework

·         Apply and successfully complete program portfolio defense

·         Purchase and Complete Certify Teacher preparation exam

·         Successfully obtain AEL (formerly ILD) and TTESS (fomerly PDAS) certification

·         Apply for Graduation

For students currently holding an approved Master's degree and seeking principal certification only:

·         Complete 24 sch of coursework

·         Apply and successfully complete program portfolio defense

·         Purchase and Complete Certify Teacher preparation exam

·         Successfully obtain AEL (formerly ILD) and TTESS (formerly PDAS) certification

*You must hold a valid Texas teacher certificate AND at least 2 years teaching experience in a TEA accredited school in order to become fully certified. These are not requirements to enter the program and may be completed concurrently with coursework.

Practicum Requirements:

All students will be required to complete 160 clock-hours of field-based experience during the last semester of enrollment in the principal certification program. Students will enroll in ED 7313, Practicum in School Administration, with the approval of the program major advisor. The practicum offers an opportunity for the student to work within a school district under the guidance and supervision of an appointed mentor and a university supervisor. Please contact the program major advisor for detailed information regarding the practicum requirements.

Additional Program Requirements:

In order to be approved for the principal certification exam (TExES 268) by Sul Ross State University, students must provide the department with a copy of AEL and TTESS certification.  This certification can be obtained through the local Region Education Service Center (RESC).  It is advised that the student contact the RESC early in order to become familiar with cost of completion, program delivery site, and dates of availability. For questions regarding ILD and PDAS certification, contact your program advisor.
